Medical Weight Loss vs Diet Programs and Apps in San Antonio, TX
Commercial diet programs, meal plans and tracking apps help many people build healthier habits. Medical weight loss is a different approach that adds a physician and, when appropriate, prescription medicine. They are not either-or. This page explains how they differ and how they can work together.
What diet programs and apps offer
- Structure: meal plans, calorie or point tracking, community or coaching.
- Accountability and day-to-day behavior support.
- Typically no medical evaluation and no prescription medicine.
What medical weight loss adds
- A physician review of your history, medicines and health conditions.
- Prescription medication when appropriate, with safety monitoring and dose adjustments.
- Attention to conditions linked to weight, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
- Follow-up with a physician over time.
Where they overlap
Prescription weight-loss medicines are used together with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. A diet program or app you like can be part of that plan. TeleSlim Clinic also includes nutrition and exercise guidance and lifestyle coaching.
Choosing for yourself
- If you want structure and have no medical concerns, a program may be enough to start.
- If you have a higher BMI, weight-related conditions or have not reached your goals, ask a physician whether medical treatment is appropriate.
- Cost: diet programs usually have subscription fees. Our care is $99 for the first video visit and $99 per month, and medication is a separate cost. See our cost guide for San Antonio.
Questions from San Antonio patients
Do I have to give up my current program?
No. Tell your physician what you use, and they will help you fit it into your plan.
Is medication a shortcut?
It is a tool, used with nutrition and activity changes. Results vary.
Cost and how to get started
TeleSlim Clinic visits are self-pay: $99 for the first video consultation and $99 per month for physician follow-up, with lower per-month rates on 3-month, 6-month and annual plans (see our cost guide for San Antonio). The medication is a separate cost paid at the pharmacy or through manufacturer programs. Cash prices for weight-loss medications typically run about $150 to $450 per month depending on the medicine and dose, and they change over time, so ask your pharmacy for the current price. We provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer, but reimbursement is not guaranteed (see insurance and weight loss medication in San Antonio).
TeleSlim Clinic does not dispense medication, and we do not offer compounded GLP-1 medications. If your physician prescribes a medicine, the prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose. Visits are by video with Dr. Diala Alatassi, MD, DABIM, DABOM, FACP, who is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine and licensed to practice in Texas. TeleSlim Clinic serves adults 18 and older.
Book your $99 video visit to talk through your options with a Texas-licensed physician.
